Mayfly magic

This is far too interesting not to share! And if you hadn’t noticed yet, I do love these little creatures. Stonefly nymphs are carnivorous while mayfly nymphs are herbivores. However on hatching and flying stoneflies become herbivores and mayflies don’t feed at all.

In fact, an adult mayfly may fly for only a couple of hours before dying, having first (hopefully) mated. Stoneflies on the other hand may last for several days or weeks. Fish like trout love these flies and so many a keen fly fisher spends hours, days weeks tying and perfecting flies which mimic these insects. Incidentally mayflies don’t just appear in May, but that can certainly be busy month for them.
