Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, DG9 9HP
Perched high on top of the cliffs of the Rhins of Galloway, at Scotland’s southern most point, is the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, with its 26 metre high tower. It’s a spectacular place to visit, along with the Gaillie Craig cafe and the RSPB visitor centre and area.
Glenluce Abbey, DG8 0AF
Founded in 1192 by the Earl of Galloway, the ruins of this Cistercian house occupy a site of great natural beauty and contain a fully intact chapter house.Visit the small exhibition of archaeological finds. The Abbey was visited by Robert the Bruce, James IV and Queen Mary of Scots.
Castle of St John, DG9 7EJ
This is a recently renovated tower-house in the centre of Stranraer which offers superb views over Loch Ryan. Over the years it was used as a family house, military garrison and a prison.
Bladnoch Distillery and Visitor Centre, DG8 9AB
Scotland’s most southerly distillery nestles on the green banks of the River Bladnoch. The distillery shop offers a great selection of Bladnoch Whisky and a huge variety of Scottish gifts, glassware, jewellery and woollens.
Threave Castle, Castle Douglas
This is a 14th century castle standing by the shore of the river Dee. To get there you must ring the bell and wait for the boatman to ferry you over to the island. Also worth visiting is the nearby National Trust Threave House Estate and Gardens.
