Welcome

It has been our family’s honour to create, restore and care for one of Scotland’s hidden treasures for almost 300 years. These important historical Gardens, situated on an isthmus, consist of 300ha (75 acres) of sculptured landscapes, and magnificent avenues radiating out from the iconic Castle Kennedy ruins. Described as ‘one of the showpieces of Galloway’, it is one of Scotland's most important historical landscaped gardens with its collection of Rhododendrons, Championship Trees and rare species.

The Gardens are perfect for exploring and provides a fun day out for families, with a charming Tea Room, Gift Shop and Plant Centre.

We warmly welcome you to the Gardens and we look forward to seeing you soon.

The mature trees provide perfect wildlife habitats for a wide variety of birdlife, from the tiny Goldcrest to the larger Buzzard. In addition to the Finches, Tits, Thrushes and Warblers, you might spot some of our more memorable woodland inhabitants such as the Sparrowhawk, Spotted Woodpecker and Pied Flycatcher. Our beautiful Eucryphia Glutinosa, Brush Bush, is in full bloom and the bees are having a feast! A large deciduous shrub or small tree which can grow from 4 to 8 metres in height with dark green glossy leaves turning an orange-red in Autumn and flowers are borne either singly or in pairs. It was originally introduced from its native Chile by Richard Pearce via the Veitch nurseries in 1859 and is proudly our Plant of Interest this week! Last week at Castle Kennedy Gardens, our gardening Last week at Castle Kennedy Gardens, our gardening team started collecting Monkey Puzzle, Araucaria araucana, seeds for sale and growing the next generation. Planted in 1856, they are now in their prime along Monkey Puzzle Avenue. You can buy plants with us at our Plant Centre, propagated from seeds thought to have been the first seeds gathered from their native Chile and then planted in the UK. Plant them in your own gardens and watch them grow into giants! Did you know that the Walled Garden is at its best Did you know that the Walled Garden is at its best this time of year? In particular the main herbaceous borders. The Eucryphia are coming into flower. Particularly noteworthy are the nymansay specimens – the two facing out of the canal bridge at the entrance to the Gardens (40 feet high) and the one guarding the southern gates of the Walled Garden. There are others in the Gardens such as the Champion Eucrypia Cordifolia and they are also a feature of the Dancing Green at this time of year.
